MARG LIVES UP TO ITS PROMISE AND IGNITES SMILES

25th March 2012...

On 18th of September 2011 in the evening hour, Sikkim was hit by a massive earthquake and the casualty reached more than 110. The surrounding areas of Darjeeling district were also badly affected.

Villagers of Samagoan, which falls under Kalimpong 2 approached MARG for support. Hence on 25th September 2011 MARG representative reached the affected village and with the help of local villagers toured the entire area of Kagey, Maria, SamaGoan and a very remote place named Rabek which falls under Kagey Gram Panchayat, Kalimpong 2. MARG was then informed by the villagers of Rabek, Kagey and Samagoan that MARG was the only organisation who had visited them house to house evaluating the damages made by earthquake.

MARG then had promised the victims some support and this promise was fulfilled on 26th March 2012 where fourteen (14) families, 7 from Rebek and 7 from Samagaon were given four bags of cement and one bundle of Tin roof (8’ x3’) each for repair/ reconstruction of their damaged houses.

A local committee was formed to identify the genuine victims and this was approved by MARG. The victims had to sign an undertaking that they would not sell the received materials and would utilize it for repair/reconstruction of their damaged houses. A vigilance committee consisting of the local villagers was also formed and the  affected victims also gave an undertaking that after three month when the vigilance committee would do a survey  and if found the materials not properly used by them,  they  would have to return the entire materials to MARG and MARG would then hand it to the next deserving family. The villagers of Maria, Kagey, Rai Gaon, Rabek and Sama gaon along with the senior students of Kagey High School, Kagey  Kalimpong accompanied by their teachers  attended the Anti-Human Trafficking awareness camp which was organized by MARG. The students at the end of the awareness informed us that they have now been empowered and are ready to join the battle to defeat the enemy which has been engulfing our society, i.e. Human Trafficking.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank every individual who contributed for this cause in their own ways and I look forward in serving the society through your support.  Without your help we would not have been successful to Ignite Smiles. After the natural calamity there were loads of promises and assurance which overflowed from every regions but even after 6 months of the disaster people are still waiting and hoping that promises which were promised turns into reality someday. Again the villagers informed us that the initiative which MARG too was the first of its kind in that region.  We feel happy that we have lived up to our motto of IGNITING SMILES in simple yet effective ways.
